2018 Grant Recipients

Louise Avery, President of the Kitimat Community Foundation, and in her 6^th year on the Foundation Board, awarded the 2018 recipients at the May 2018 AGM. Avery thanked the dedication of the Foundation Board members and ACT Committee members, and Committee Chair Michelle Popp for their excellent work over the last year, and the residents of Kitimat here and those abroad for their continuing support of the Telethon, now completed its 38^th year.  Raised $85,000 in one day! Total of Grants for 2018 – $48,471.28

 

Tamitik Status of Women:  Tamitik Status of Women (TSW) provides services for the underprivileged, empowering clients for further growth and independence in a time of need, crisis or hardship.  TSW programs reduce isolation while increasing social connections.$11,400 – Supplies for Angel Tree, baby needs, hygiene, furniture, food, school supplies, and recreation passes. Board Member Michelle Martins accepted on behalf of TSW. 

Special Olympics, Kitimat, BC:  The Kitimat Special Olympics enriches the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities through sport.  The vision is that sport will open hearts and minds towards people with intellectual disabilities and create an inclusive community.$2,000 Rental fees at Kitimat sports facilities and sports equipment necessary for athletes to participate in their sport. Board Member Madeleine Robinson accepted on behalf of the Kitimat BC Special Olympics.

Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Society, 63 Kitimat:  The Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR 63 Kitimat) makes funds available to purchase vessels and equipment to maintain life-saving services on the greater Douglas Channel area.$10,000 – purchase of night vision goggles and accessories and a Cardiac Science G3 PLUS semi-auto AED (automated external defibrillator) and a waterproof case. Society Member Chris Peacock accepted on behalf of the Kitimat 63 Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Society.

Kitimat Museum & Archives:  Provides arts, heritage, and culture services to Kitimat citizens and visitors.  Funding is spent on Museum services, youth programming, and exhibitions for the benefit of Kitimat, Haisla and region.$3,800 – Museum in the Classroom Art Workshops and Program tables. Board Chair Robin Rowland accepted on behalf of the Kitimat Museum & Archives.

Kitimat Community Services Society: Is committed to improving the quality of life for all citizens in the Kitimat Valley by providing programs to enhance personal, academic, and employment potential.$3,250 – Equipment and furnishings for the Kitimat Youth Centre. Treasurer Del Baker accepted on behalf of the Kitimat Community Services Society.          

Kitimat Community Development Centre: The Kitimat Community Development Centre (Kitimat CDC) is a family resource centre providing child, youth, family and community services in Kitimat.$13,021.28 –  Indoor gym equipment for Physiotherapy, children’s nutrition program for the Kid’s Place Pre-school, program tools and equipment for the Speech-Language Pathology Program, the Autism Behaviour Program, and Occupational Therapy Program, children’s books with sound, the Infant Development Program, a refrigerator for the Child & Youth Care and Kid’s Place Pre-school programs, and a vacuum cleaner and binding machine for the Centre. Marianne Hemmy accepted on behalf of the Kitimat Community Development Centre.

Kitimat Arts for Youth: The Kitimat Arts for Youth (KAFY) supports all visual and performing arts for youth in the communities of Kitimat and Kitamaat Village.$5,000 – Music & Munchies Band Workshop and KAFY Beyond Band Week early in 2019, instrument purchase and repair for the Kitimat Band Program, the Band Adventure Camp 2018. Vice President Nancyjane Harness accepted on behalf of Kitimat Arts for Youth.
